There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding Radon. We would like to present some Radon Fast Facts to help “clear the air”:
Radon Fast Fact #1:
Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil & rock.
Radon Fast Fact #2:
You cannot see, taste, or smell Radon. It is an invisible, odorless gas.
Radon Fast Fact #3:
Radon poses a health risk. It is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers & the second leading cause of lung cancer overall. It is responsible for 21,000 deaths in the United States each year.
Radon Fast Fact #4
Radon can build to dangerous levels inside of homes, schools & businesses. It is emitted from the ground & enters through cracks in walls, basement floors, foundations & other openings.
Radon Fast Fact #5
The only way to know if your home has radon is to have a radon test performed. These can be done on your own or through a licensed radon tester. (A company cannot legally test for radon AND mitigate for radon).
Radon Fast Fact #6:
There is no such thing as a safe level of radon. The EPA recommends having a radon reduction system put into place if your home tests higher than 4.0 pCi/L. Anything below this level is considered an “acceptable level” of radon. Even below 4.0 pCi/L, radon can pose a serious health risk.
Radon Fast Fact #7:
You can reduce the level of radon within your home. This is done by having a radon mitigation system installed. Each radon mitigation system is built to a home’s specific specifications, as no two homes are exactly alike.
