If you don’t care about radon, you don’t know that it is naturally occurring. Radon is the result of uranium breaking down in the rocks and soil. It then presents as a radioactive gas, which is cancer causing. The worst part about not caring about radon is that you might not know that it CAN be fixed!
Even thought it is odorless, colorless, and tasteless, you can detect radon. There are two types of tests you can conduct. One is a short term test and one is a long term test. You will know if you need to install a radon mitigation system if your levels are higher than the EPA’s action limit of 4.0 pCi/L. These systems help reduce the levels of radon in your home by redirecting it outside. Once outside, the radon is diluted by the air.
Radon mitigation systems should be installed by a licensed radon mitigation professional. The state of Illinois does not allow companies to test & mitigate radon. This keeps companies from having a conflict of interest. A radon tester will never tell you that you have a higher level of radon just so they can perform a mitigation, because they CANNOT perform a mitigation!
