In almost every post, we’ve talked about how radon gas is naturally occurring. When radon gas becomes trapped in your home, it creates unsafe levels, increasing your risk of radon exposure. The national average of outside radon levels is 0.4 pCi/L. While the only truly safe level of radon is no radon, this is well below the EPAs recommended action limit.
We’ve compiled a list of fun things you can do outside, lowering your risk of radon exposure.
1) Go to the park. Look up local parks in your area. Try out one that you’ve never been to before. Pack a picnic & enjoy the day with your family.
2) Play catch. Or Frisbee. Or Bags. Or any other outdoor game. Not only will you be decreasing your chances of radon exposure, you will be getting in some great exercise, which is good for your heart, too!
3) Take a walk. It gives you the chance to connect with your neighbors. You can share some of that great radon knowledge.
4) Go for a bike ride. Many towns have miles of trails. Get back to nature & make some great family memories, all while knowing you have a reduced risk of radon exposure with each deep breath!
5) Plant a garden. It’s satisfying to watch something grow, plus it’s great for the environment. The plus side, you get homegrown fruits & vegetables.
6) Draw with chalk. Who says that only four year olds can play hopscotch? Tap into your creative side & show your inner artist…on your sidewalk & driveway.
7) Sip lemonade on the porch. Spend a quiet evening watching the sunset & see what every great country artist is singing about.
There is no limit to the things you can do outside. Even though there are levels of radon outside, they are typically lower than those that can naturally occur in your home, decreasing your risks of radon exposure. While you are waiting for your radon reduction system installed, go outside & take a deep breath of fresh air.
