A lot of people think that a radon mitigation system will hurt their home value. In fact, the opposite can be true. A properly functioning radon mitigation system can add value to your home.
As we’ve mentioned before, radon is naturally occurring. It comes from the breakdown of uranium in dirt and rocks. The end result is the carcinogen radon. Radon is a radioactive gas that is heavier than air. Because of this, it collects in the lowest points of a home. This is often the basement.
Many families spend a lot of time in their basements. Whether it is because they have a bar, a bedroom, or they just send the kids down there to play, they could be exposing themselves to the dangers of radon.
Radon mitigation systems are installed in the lower points of homes (like a basement or crawlspace). The system will collect the radon and push it back out, typically over the roof, into the outside air. Doing so leaves the house with very low levels of radon. Some radon mitigation systems can remediate radon up to 99%.
Since a radon mitigation system lowers the levels of radon in a home, there is no longer a concern of being exposed to dangerously high levels of radon. So long as the system is functioning properly, radon in the home will be maintained at a safe level.
Radon is a problem in over 40% of homes in Illinois. When a home has a radon mitigation system in place, it is physical proof that the problem is being addressed. It can put potential buyers’ minds at ease. They will know that the basement is a safe place for their children to play and their families to spend time. They will also know the rest of the home is safe as well.
Would you buy a home with a radon mitigation system? Why or why not?
